Boise police department: Officer-involved shooting on South Dale Street

BOISE, idaho (CBS2) — Boise Police Officers responded to a call in the 1100 block of S. Dale St. near Ann Morrison Park Apartments. An adult male in his 50's, according to BPD, approached officers in the parking lot carrying 'multiple weapons.' The suspect did not comply and charged at officers when they opened fire in close proximity.

The suspect died at the scene of his injuries.

Boise Police Chief Ron Winegar spoke in a live update from the scene. The suspect who was involved in the shooting with at least two Boise Police officers is dead from his injuries. Chief Winegar says the suspect himself is believed to have been the one who made an initial call for service from the police.

The suspect was armed with a "edged weapon" according to Chief Winegar. The fear of attack from a blade is still top of mind for local officers after an Ada County Sheriff's Deputy was seriously injured by an attack with a knife by a suspect on the I-84.

The investigation is ongoing into what happened, including from body camera footage from officers involved in the shooting. Chief Winegar says "this is more than just a police problem, events like this where people are all too willing to commit violence against our officers has become all too common." He stopped short of calling it an all out mental health crisis, but did say that mental health and how we as a community respond to the needs of people plays a serious part.

Boise Police officers were working on a vehicle vs. pedestrian accident in which a 16-year-old boy was hit while skateboarding across 16th St. by Albertsons by a dump truck. The boy died of his injuries on the scene and officers investigating that scene were there just an hour before they were called to respond to an officer-involved shooting at this scene.

This is the second shooting involving Boise Police in just over a week. The previous shooting happened on July 26th.
