Coco Gauff reveals this is the first time she saw tears in her dads eyes after her historic
American teenager Coco Gauff scripted history on Saturday when she defeated World No.2, Aryna Sabalenka, to win the 2023 US Open championship. Gauff had been a fan favorite for the title win ever since the start of the Grand Slam. Her incredible achievement at just 19 years of age made the youngster’s father break down in tears.
Gauff faced Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus in the Arthur Ashe Stadium on Saturday night. Soon to be ranked the World No.1, Sabalenka did not allow Gauff to take a lead in the first set and absolutely demolished her with a 6-2 win. The 25-year-old, however, made a slew of mistakes in the subsequent sets which Gauff took advantage of. The American made a remarkable comeback in the second set, which further unnerved the Belarusian. Gauff sealed her victory with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 win in the final round.
Following her triumph in the tournament, Gauff took a moment to thank her parents. She also revealed that it was the first time she had seen her dad, Corey Gauff, in tears. “Today was the first time I’ve seen my dad cry. Thank you guys. You believed in me from the beginning,” the 19-year-old said. She also disclosed that she used to visit the stadium to watch the Williams sisters compete. “I’ve been coming to this tournament, sitting right there watching Venus & Serena compete. It’s incredible.”
The teenager credited her father for the win and disclosed that he had been a constant pillar of support for her. Gauff has had a sensational run this season. With her recent win at the Flushing Meadows, she has established her first-ever Grand Slam victory.
Coco Gauff scripts history with her 2023 US Open win
Coco Gauff defeated French Open champ, Aryna Sabalenka on Saturday to win her maiden Grand Slam title. With her historic win, Coco has become the first American teenager to claim the title after Serena Williams did so back in 1999 at 17 years of age. She is now the third American teen to achieve this feat after Tracy Austin and Serena Williams.
Gauff made a disheartening first-round exit from Wimbledon a few months back. The 19-year-old, however, bounced back in the face of adversity to win the Citi Open, the Cincinnati Open, and the US Open.
