In 1998, she and Joseph Robinette “Beau” Biden III, a federal prosecutor in the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, began dating. During a family thanksgiving dinner celebration at the Biden’s home in Nantucket, the two became engaged. They subsequently married in 2002.

Together the couple had two children: Natalie Naomi Biden (born in 2004) and Robert Hunter Biden II (born in 2006). The family resided in Wilmington, Delaware while Beau served as the Attorney General of Delaware. 

In 2010, Beau was hospitalised after suffering a mild stroke due to complications from a headache. Three years later, NBC News reports that he was admitted again, and diagnosed with brain cancer. The lesion was removed and he underwent both chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Despite the treatments, the disease recurred two years later, and he passed away 10 days after his hospitalisation in 2015. His death was widely mourned, and his funeral was attended by many prominent politicians, including then-President Barack Obama, former President Bill Clinton, and the then-Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell.

Widowed at 41, the mother of two faced the difficult challenge of raising her kids by herself.

Nevertheless, she mustered her inner strength to continue loving and caring for her children. The Biden family, the Olivere family, and many friends and acquaintances stood by her side during her grief.

A year later after her husband died, Biden started having an affair with Beau’s younger brother, Hunter. But their relationship did not lead to marriage.

Five months after his brother’s demise, Hunter’s marriage crumbled. The couple filed for divorce. Thereafter, many speculated Hunter found comfort in the person closest to his brother’s passing, Hallie Biden, and in 2016, they started a relationship.

After her breakup with Hunter Biden, Capital Gazette reported that The Key School sued Hallie Biden for not paying $55,740 in tuition for her two children for the 2018–2019 school year.

In August 2022, a fake Twitter account pretending to be that of Hallie Biden posted: “President Trump won the election and my family is aware of it.” The post garnered more than 90 likes in two weeks.

But a fact check by USA TODAY, backed up by an emailed statement from a spokesperson for the Beau Biden Foundation, proved that the tweet was false and not from the sister-in-law of the president. Biden’s spokesperson declared that the account was operated by a fraudster and not by Hallie.

Hallie Biden was revealed to be the third member of the current U.S. first family included in the Republican-led probe into claims of the Biden family profiting off of business deals using their names. GOP representatives revealed information from subpoenaed bank accounts which showed Hallie Biden had reportedly received a $3 million payment from an associate of Hunter Biden originating from China.

This has led to an expansion of the investigation into whether the Biden family had used their names to gain financial benefit from ventures across the globe.
