US tennis star Madison Keys clashed with Czech’s Marketa Vondrousova in the quarterfinal match on Wednesday at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. However, before the game could be set into motion, a spectator from the stands required medical attention.

Before the commencement of a single game in the first set, it was announced that medical staff, including first-aid responders, had been called to check on the person. After a delay of about 8 minutes, the match resumed.

During the day matches at Arthur Ashe, the stadium roof was closed partially for two days in a row. The humidity levels in New York topped 50% and the temperatures peaked at mid-30 degrees. However, the players were left struggling in the extreme heat. Prior to the match between Keys and Vondrousova, Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev had clashed on the court. The Russians were seen struggling to keep their focus on the game.

During their day-session match, with the heat taking a toll on both Medvedev and his opponent‘s bodies, the World No.3 turned to an on-court camera to issue a warning.“One player is gonna die, And they’re gonna see,” the 27-year-old wrote. After winning the match against Rublev, Medvedev revealed, “I don’t think I had anything left, but if the match would go on I would find something more,” in a press conference. “And the only thing that is a little bit, let’s call it dangerous, is that the question is how far could we go?,” he added.

Extreme heat at the US Open takes a toll on players and fans alike

Wednesday marked the ‘hottest day’ of the tournament at the Flushing Meadows. Post the match between Andrey Rublev and third seed, Daniil Medvedev, the 27-year-old told the media, “At the end of the first set I couldn’t see the ball anymore. I played with sensations and he did the same sometime.”

Medvedev has called for the doctor on court on previous occasions. He also had to retort to an inhaler mid-match thanks to the thick New York air. Extreme heat on-court has taken a toll on several players. Many have critiqued the tournament officials for putting the well-being of the players on the sidelines.
