Top 10 types of noses you should know
The nose stands out among other features of the face. This is probably why it is often used when describing beauty standards. However, there are different types of noses, depending on one’s genetics, and racial background, among others.
A perfect nose does not exist. According to a New York facial plastic surgeon, Edward S. Kwak, MD, each nose is unique to its owner.
“The best-looking noses aren’t perfectly shaped,” he says. “The best nose is one that fits your face and creates harmony with your facial features.”
So, next time you covet a favourite celebrity’s nose, note that this feature looks beautiful on the person simply because it fits them. What works for A may not work for B. So, be careful if you are considering doing a nose job.
Israeli professor, Abraham Tamir, first compiled the types of noses in 2011. Tamir found that there are 14 different types of noses after he used a sample size of 1,800 images from prominent artworks over time, including photographs of people he had taken in Europe or Israel.
Some critics have since dismissed his study, stating that it is limited since it did not include nasal features from other continents. However, this article shall list the top 10 common types of noses across all continents.

1. Straight nose
The straight nose is one of the most coveted noses in rhinoplasty surgery. A straight nose is a 106-degree nasal tip rotation, which means it is mathematically almost perfect. Noses between 104-108 degrees in their orientation are considered the most beautiful.

According to Tamir, a straight nose presents a pleasant appearance and also combines clear thinking, tolerance and trustworthiness with unyielding tenacity. People with such noses are likely to be great experts on the subject of art and beauty.
The Duchess nose, named after the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, is an example of the much coveted straight nose. According to Harley Street facial cosmetic surgeon Dr Julian De Silva, the Duchess had inspired many women to improve their appearances with cosmetic surgery.
He said on Daily Mail UK: ‘Kate is one of the most beautiful women in the world but it is her nose that both men and women want to replicate.
‘It defines her beauty and is one of the reasons why rhinoplasty has never been more popular. It is the most common facial plastic procedure but it is also the most sophisticated.’
The straight nose suits both men and women.
2. Roman nose
The Roman nose is long and has a downward-sloping tip. The bridge is often slightly bent or curved. This type of nose is often seen in historical Roman sculptures. It is also usually found in people with a strong, bold, and defined profile. A great look for men, signifying power and elegance. But not for women.
3. Hawk nose
The hawk nose is characterised by a small bent in the middle of the nose and sharp edges. It is similar in shape to the beak of a hawk, which is where it got its name from. The raised middle to lower third of the bridge is called polybeak in medical terminology. This type of nose is generally not considered attractive but some celebrities have managed to pull it off perfectly. Top of the list is the legendary American singer and actress, Barbara Streisand.
4. Fleshy nose
The fleshy nose is the most common type of nose, with about 25 per cent of the world’s population. It is large and prominent in shape, with more fatty portions than the bony ones. Rihanna, Albert Einstein, Prince Philip, Mark Ruffalo and many more people have this type of nose. Tamir posited that people with this type of nose, particularly men, are generous, emotional and sensitive, but also enough sensible not to get involved in speculation.
5. Snub nose
The snub nose is a small nose sloping upwards at the tip so that the nostrils are visible. Although it is small, its tip is rounder and softer. According to Tamir, people with snub noses frequently lack spiritual and physical maturity. They know everything and everybody, but they are so carefree that they always get into trouble. Elizabeth Taylor is an example of a celebrity with a snub nose.

6. Nubian/African nose
The Nubian nose features a long bridge with a wide base. It is also called a wide nose and it is often common among people of African descent. Beyonce, Zendaya and Gabrielle Union, among many others, have this type of nose. According to Tamir, this type of nose indicates a skilled person, entertaining and fundamentally pessimistic in outlook.
7. Turned-up/celestial nose
The turned-up nose, also known as the celestial nose, is small in size with a dent at the middle side of the bridge and a prominent lobule or tip. It is one of the most desirable types of noses in rhinoplasty surgery. Academy Award winner, Emma Stone, has this type of nose.
8. Greek nose
The Greek nose is almost like the straight/Duchess nose except for the fact that it has less of a button at the end than the Duchess. However, it is a desirable choice among models. According to Dr. De Silva, the striking characteristic of this nose is the long and elegant bridge. Friends actress, Jennifer Aniston, is known to have this nose, a blessing from her Greek heritage.
9. Aquiline nose
The aquiline nose is one of the most desirable noses, especially among men. It is a type of nose with a straight profile, a well-proportioned tip and slightly enlarged nostrils. Tamir stated that the aquiline nose symbolises a cool tactician person as well as business-minded, aggressive and has considerable stamina.
10. East Asian nose
The East Asian nose is narrow with a broader shape and a shorter tip. It is one of the most common types of noses for people of East Asian descent. Awkwafina and Lucy Lui are examples of celebrities with this type of nose.
Other noses include bumpy nose, bulbous tipped nose, short nose, high nose, combo nose, Nixon nose, rounded nose and hooked nose.
