WATCH: Best play in Michigan football history! Blake Corums INSANE run resulting in a g
On Monday night, the Rose Bowl tie between the Michigan Wolverines and the Alabama Crimson Tide required overtime to decide the winner. Michigan’s quarterback, J.J. McCarthy, took the snap and handed the ball over to running back Blake Corum for his 19th carry from 2nd and 2.
Corum grabbed the ball and wriggled past a couple of Tide players. The Michigan offensive lineman cleared a path for him to check his run and dash for the corner. One of the Bama players tried to halt his progression just before the end zone, but Corum twisted his body and got free from the hold.
The momentum took him inside the Bama goal area to score the all-important touchdown for Michigan to clinch their first Rose Bowl since the days of Tom Brady back in 1997 (Brady did not play in it. He was only part of the team). In between, they have reached this far on three separate occasions. In 2004, 2005, and 2007, they lost twice to USC and once to the Texas Longhorns.
Corum’s mazy run had restored their pride in being the No. 1 team in the Big 10 conference. And the football fans went bonkers witnessing such a play from the young rusher.
The final score was Michigan 27-20 Alabama. After the game, ESPN caught up with Blake Corum inside the Wolverines locker room. He was talking to his father on the phone. Then he answered a few questions for the media. He explained what was going through the minds of the players when the game went into OT.
We just kept saying, 'Do or die. Do we want this to be the last time we play together?' We were able to come together as a unit, as brothers, on that drive.Corum said
Michigan offensive guard Trevor Keegan said,
When I saw Blake, man, and saw his eyes, it was like there was a devil in his eyes or something.
Corum revealed how he pulled off the final play.
As soon as we went to overtime, I knew we had momentum. I knew we were going to be victorious.
He ended the game with 83 yards. Quarterback McCarthy completed 17 passes for 221 yards and 3 touchdowns, along with 3 carries for 25 yards. Roman Wilson (4 receptions for 73 yards) and Tyler Morris (2 receptions for 45 yards) shared one each. Their next stop is the college football playoff final against the Washington Huskies.
